World Radio Day (WRD) was proposed in 2011 by the UNESCO General Conference and unanimously approved by the United Nations General Assembly the very next year. World Radio Day was created to commemorate the establishment of the United Nations Radio on February 13th, 1946. Every year a particular theme is highlighted. This year’s theme is “Radio & Trust.”
The radio invented in 1985 by then young Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi remains a valuable instrument for disseminating information. Over a century later and despite the technological advancement in communication, it remains one of the most used and truest media in the world.
The radio is a widely used, low-cost medium capable of reaching remote areas and disenfranchised populations. Radio has the unique ability to reach the broadest audience. It allows for the dissemination of critical information and is a powerful tool for spreading awareness. For the aforementioned reasons, it is important that the radio be used responsibly to keep the trust of the people.
We advocate the use of radio to transmit reliable educational content, to give a voice to the voiceless, and raise awareness about crucial issues throughout the world.
